Look, we get it - nobody wants to see ICE agents storming through New York City. But maybe, just maybe, if they're nabbing actual violent criminals, we can collectively chill for a second.
That's apparently too much to ask for NYC's perpetually outraged political class, who are absolutely losing it after ICE had the audacity to *check notes* and arrest about 30 people accused of violent crimes. The horror!
Leading the pearl-clutching parade is City Comptroller Brad Lander, who called the arrests "heartbreaking." What's actually heartbreaking, Brad thinks that violent criminals should get a pass just because they crossed the border illegally. But go off, I guess.
Not to be outdone in the dramatic overreaction department, Rep. Nydia Velazquez jumped in to declare that "this mass deportation agenda is targeting our loved ones." Mass deportation of... 30 people? Math isn't my strong suit, but that doesn't quite add up. And unless your loved ones are members of the notorious Tren de Aragua gang, they're probably fine.
Speaking of which, let's talk about the people ICE actually arrested. The raids nabbed Anderson Zambrano-Pacheco, an alleged ringleader of said gang, who's wanted for kidnapping, burglary, and menacing. They also picked up a guy wanted for double homicide. You know, real "pillars of the community" types.
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem (yes, that's a thing now) took to Twitter to flex about removing "dirtbags" from the streets, sharing footage of perp walks that would make Law & Order proud. Not exactly subtle, but then again, neither is breaking into apartments with heavy weapons, which is what some of these folks were up to.
But wait, there's more! State AG Letitia James, apparently forgetting she's supposed to be New York's top law enforcement officer, jumped in to make sure the violent criminals' rights weren't being violated. Because heaven forbid we make kidnapping suspects uncomfortable.
The cherry on top? State Sen. Julia Salazar called these arrests "draconian and fascistic." TIL that arresting accused murderers is literally fascism. Who knew?
Here's the thing: 71% of Americans are actually fine with deporting illegal immigrants who commit crimes, according to Harvard CAPS/Harris polling. Wild how being against violent crime is a bipartisan position, huh?
But don't tell that to NYC's political class. They're too busy competing for the most hyperventilating tweet about law enforcement doing its job. Meanwhile, the rest of New York is just wondering what these politicians are smoking - and whether we can get some because it must be pretty good to make protecting violent criminals seem like a winning position.
