You draw (yet another) important parallel to the Roman Empire and our growing desensitization to violence. This pivotal event is bound to be glossed over in a world of increasing horrors. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.
I once observed a man in a wheelchair who had managed to get on the up escalator in the NYC Subway only to have the chair tip over at the top. People coming upon him as they arrived at the top, literally stepped on him or over him as he lay on his side beside the toppled wheelchair, nobody even stopped. I was shocked and unable to get anyoneβs attention to help him for at least 5 minutes. Then I noticed a big strong, young man ascending, I looked him directly in the eye and said, you look like a strong man, would you please help me get this man up and back in his wheelchair. He agreed. To this day I am shocked at the total lack of interest on the part of hundreds of passersby to help a fellow human in need.
Thank you for writing about this horrific crime. I had not even heard about it, until seeing your article.
