Toyota Agrees to $78.5 Million Settlement in Class Action Lawsuit Over Defective Airbag Control Units
Owners of Certain Toyota Models May Be Eligible for Reimbursements and Payments: Here's What You Need to Know
The most I can do for my friend is simply be his friend.
Toyota, the Japanese automotive giant, has settled a class action lawsuit that alleged defects in the ZF-TRW Airbag Control Units (ACU) used in a range of Toyota vehicles. These ACU units were allegedly susceptible to “an electrical overstress condition” that could cause the airbags to fail to deploy during a collision, posing a significant safety risk.
How Much Is the Settlement for?
The settlement will see Toyota provide $78.5 million in payments and credits to affected vehicle owners, pending final court approval. This sum will cover reimbursements for Toyota owners' expenses when the affected car models were recalled in 2020. Such expenses include costs for rental vehicles, towing, lost wages if owners needed to bring their vehicles in for repairs, and more.
Is There a Cash Settlement?
While the $78.5 million settlement will primarily reimburse affected owners for out-of-pocket expenses, some Toyota owners may receive a “residual distribution payment” of up to $250 if the remaining funds are in the settlement account.
What Toyota Vehicles Are Included in the Settlement?
If you owned or leased any of the following Toyota vehicles, you may be eligible to claim part of the settlement:
2011–2019 Toyota Corolla
2011–2013 Toyota Corolla Matrix

Do I Have to Do Anything to Be Included in the Settlement?
