In a bid for justice over fair pricing, Lori Hartline has initiated a class action lawsuit against Dollar General Corporation and Dolgencorp LLC, commonly known as Dollar General. The lawsuit, which was filed in a federal court in Oklahoma, alleges that the popular discount retailer has been regularly charging customers more at the register than the advertised prices on the shelves.
Hartline, a meticulous shopper from Porum, Oklahoma, claims to have noticed discrepancies between the prices advertised on the shelves and the amounts charged at checkout during her shopping trips at Dollar General. Her concern led to filing three complaints this year with the Oklahoma Attorney General, alleging that Dollar General has been overcharging her for merchandise.
According to the lawsuit, "It is Defendant’s policy and practice to charge a higher price at the register for merchandise than the price advertised on the unit price labels for the same merchandise on the shelves in Defendant’s Oklahoma stores." Hartline seeks to represent a class of consumers who, over the last three years, have experienced similar overcharges at Dollar General stores located in Oklahoma.
But the allegations extend beyond Oklahoma. The class action also cites complaints filed against Dollar General in New Jersey, Ohio, and New York by consumers who claim the retailer has regularly charged higher prices at the register than the advertised prices of merchandise on the shelves.
In the legal documentation, the plaintiffs state that "Defendant used the same procedures that they employed in charging a higher price than advertised to Plaintiffs when selling the same and/or similar merchandise to numerous other consumers in its Oklahoma stores."
Hartline alleges that Dollar General's actions are in violation of the Oklahoma Consumer Protection Act. She is demanding a jury trial, seeking injunctive and declaratory relief, along with an award of actual, treble, statutory, and punitive damages for herself and all class members.
This isn’t the first time Dollar General has found itself in legal hot water. Earlier this year, another class action lawsuit was filed against the retailer, alleging the company failed to make its website fully accessible to and independently usable by individuals who are blind or visually impaired.
