A whopping $181 million class-action lawsuit settlement has just been reached, and it's all about the inflated prices of chicken. That's right, Big Poultry has been ruffling feathers and emptying wallets across the U.S., and they're finally being called to the coop.
So, who's behind this poultry plot? Some of the biggest names in the food industry, including Tyson Foods, Pilgrim's, and George's, have agreed to settle. They've been accused of unfair price-fixing, monopoly, and oligopoly practices. In layman's terms, they colluded to rip you off. Here's the breakdown of their contributions to the settlement fund:
Tyson Foods: $99,000,000
Pilgrim's: $75,000,000
George's: $1,900,000
And a few others throwing in their chicken feed
Who Gets to Roost in the Money Nest?
If you purchased chicken or chicken products between January 1, 2009, and December 31, 2020, you could be eligible for a cash payout. The settlement is focused on residents of certain states, so check if your state is on the list. The claim deadline is still pending, so keep an eye out for that.
The chicken must have been purchased in California, District of Columbia, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island (after July 15, 2013), South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, and Wisconsin from January 1, 2009 (except for Rhode Island, which is from July 15, 2013), to July 31, 2019.
To be eligible to receive a payment from any of the Settlements, you must complete and submit a timely Claim Form by December 31, 2023 electronically here: HERE
Consumers are still pursuing claims against 12 additional poultry companies, including, among others, Koch Foods and Perdue Farms.
The judge determined cash compensation was preferable to coupons, which he noted could expire, according to Law360 reporting on this story. The settlement will be available to millions of class members, with the vast majority notified via email.
